Touchstone Systems

Vent Shaft 6 Compressor House Installation

Customer: GM3 Appin Mine, Douglas Park, NSW

Project type: Engineering and Construction

Project duration: 4 months

Touchstone Systems was engaged to deliver the full electrical construction and engineering package for the installation of a new Compressor House at the Appin Vent Shaft 6 (VS6) facility in Douglas Park. The project involved the careful cutover of four existing compressors into the new structure, with works staged to ensure operational vent shaft pressures were maintained throughout the transition.

The scope encompassed all electrical infrastructure within the new Compressor House, from cable tray and power distribution through to compressor integration, fire detection, and safety compliance—delivered within a tightly managed cutover program coordinated with GM-3’s operational requirements.

Key deliverables included:

  • Supply and installation of NEMA 3 cable tray throughout the Compressor House, with dedicated runs to each compressor
  • Complete lights and power installation including emergency lighting, general power, and internal and external lighting
  • Disconnection of three existing compressors and full cable relocation, followed by connection and integration of all four compressors in the new structure
  • Supply and installation of a compressor communication and monitoring system for each compressor, including network feedback
  • Arc flash and high voltage and low voltage protection coordination study, AS3000 and AS3007 audits, native as-built drawings, and individualised ITPs for all installation works

The project required close coordination with GM-3 to manage access, isolations, and compressor cutover sequencing without disrupting site operations. Touchstone Systems delivered the complete electrical scope on time, ensuring the new Compressor House met all operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
